All the other responses leave me humbled; I was all set to roll with my answer before reading the heartfelt and pure replies. So now I'm ready to dig deeper and provide less of a 'pat' contribution.
Music found me early (age 5 is the earliest I can recall) and has been a steadfast gift. It provided solace through very trying times, kept me away from substances that could have easily destroyed me, and gave me a means to express thoughts, concepts, feelings, etc. It provided an outlet that allowed me to 'own' a piece of my life which seemed absent in many other areas. It allowed me to reach, dream, and achieve in ways that I alone could measure and gain confidence within.
As maturing / healing took place, the driving and obsessive need for writing has been tamed, but the process still provides challenge, reward, and personal satisfaction on many levels. I look forward to its companionship for as long as my body and mind allows.

I make music because it's something that allows me to speak my mind and be heard. I make music because music is forever; alot of things and people won't be but I know the music will ALWAYS be there. I make music because it's in me; my heart and my soul. As a matter of fact, I don't make music. I am my music.
From young, full time, I n I feel compelled to use lyrical melody to express my inner most thoughts. I'm mean let's be for real...Music is the only univeresal language. Many different people of all races...color...creed...sex...backrounds...and social class admired Tupac Shakur...But ask your self...Honestly...would any two people with those differences even give him the time of day to hear what he may have to say?....The magic of Word...Power...and......Sound...breaks all barriors....

I can't REALLY say I make MUSIC. I mean, when the band plays covers, I play horn parts on some of them, but I didn't write those parts. There are some original songs of ours where I either wrote the horn part myself or wrote it with Tom Long, but for the most part...Tom is the horn player in the band. I write lyrics. And, well...I guess I write music at that point in time because as I'm writing, I'm usually creating the melody line. But do I write tunes without words? You know, with chord progressions and key changes and drum patterns, etc? Can't says I does. I guess I'd like to do that when I grow up though. Peace!
I MAKE MUSIC BECAUSE IT'S IN ME TO DO SO. I DON'T THINK I COULD STOP EVEN IF I TRIED MY HARDEST!...I MAKE MUSIC BECAUSE I REALIZE THAT IT'S A GOD GIVEN GIFT, AND I DON'T WANT TO WASTE IT. PEOPLE NEED TO HEAR AND FEEL WHAT I HAVE TO SAY. MUSIC IS VERY CATHARTIC FOR ME , BECAUSE IT PROVIDES THAT OUTLET TO RELEASE ALL OF YOUR INNERMOST FEELINGS IN A VERY ARTISTIC WAY. I MAKE MUSIC FOR THE "RUSH" OF THE FINISHED PRODUCT AND ALL THE POSSIBILITES THAT IT COULD LEAD TO. I MAKE MUSIC FOR THE PEOPLE WHO CAN RELATE TO EVERYTHING THAT I SAY, BUT DON'T NECESSARILY HAVE THE POWER OR THE RESOURCES TO SAY IT THEMSELVES. I MAKE MUSIC, BECAUSE MY CITY AND STATE (LEXINGTON,KY) ISN'T QUITE ON THE MAP YET (ALTHOUGH NAPPY ROOTS DID REPRESENT!). I MAKE MUSIC BECAUSE, WHEN I DON'T, THAT "ITCH" KILLS ME, AND MAKES ME COME RIGHT BACK TO IT. I MAKE MUSIC, BECAUSE IT'S MY FIRST LOVE, AND I HAVE ALOT OF PEOPLE COUNTIN' ON ME........K-NOVA
