I would like to pick a melody on the guitar and have it saved & printed as sheet music. I have an M-AUDIO Fast Track box hooked to the laptop via USB port. Laptop is running XP Pro. I have 3 different programs and I can't get any of them to 'see' my guitar through the Fast Track. Is there an economical program that will save the melody & print sheet music from it? Any help is appreciated.
I'm only familiar with one product that might accomplish what you want. It's Sonar 6 (I think version 7 is also out). The kicker here is the 'economical' part. The software runs into the several hundred dollar range and is basically a full blown digital recording studio, which is probably far more 'featuresque' than what you desire. Plus, you may need to purchase additional peripherals to get your set up to properly work for you.
There are likely other options out there as well, maybe we can work together to find you a solution. The best bet is to research the dickens out of whatever you're intending to purchase before putting cash on the table. To start, is the guitar you're seeking to record electric or acoustic? If electric, do you use foot pedals or a multi-effects processor of any kind?

Thanks for the response. I am using an acoustic-electric guitar Takamine G series. It seems what I want to do is more difficult than I thought. Seems to me a lot of beginning songwriters would want to do this since I think you must submit sheet music with a song to get a copyright. Yes, we are not looking for a full blown 'featuresque' package - just a simple basic melody to paper thing. I will continue to look, but may have to employ someone who can write the notes onto paper. thanks again, Rob
If it's simply a copyright you're after, you may be able to obtain one with just a basic home recording and the correct paperwork filled out. I have a bunch of material registered that did not require any sheet music at all - just a recording, lyric sheet(s), and the copyright fees. I'm not sure how instrumentals work, but there may be a similar method which would negate any need for additional purchases or contracting.
Tell you what, I'm going to add you as a friend and then we can take our discussion off line if you'd like. I enjoy researching stuff like this - helping people out also expands my knowledge base.

Did you really get a copyright without the sheet music??? I thought it was required. If we just need the lyrics with maybe the chords over the words that would be a lot simpler. Thanks for the comment.
