One community member who is currently a high school freshman and a member of his school's concert band said that he would like to see the following in his classroom:
The large ensemble group gets broken down into mini sections each containing parts from every instrumental section. Each small section chooses a song researches the artist/ composer and the origins of the piece and on their own, they learn how to play it. Each mini-section presents their performance and research for the entire group. Perhaps, the best group can present their piece in the upcoming semester concert.
